Physical Education
VISION
To develop competence in a range of physical activities and equip them with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to live a healthy and active life.
INTENT
At Cherry Orchard, we intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim.
In our school, we endeavour to introduce pupils to a variety of physical activities. Our curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all children, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Pupils will develop fundamental movement skills which will enhance their ability to participate in physical activity and improve their physical confidence.
Our curriculum is appropriately sequenced, ensuring that all children are given the opportunities to expand on prior learning as they develop through the key stages. We also aim to inspire our pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities that will help with their health and fitness.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Cherry Orchard, PE is taught by a combination of class teachers and PPA cover staff. Children have equal opportunities to take part in a range of sports and physical activities, within a supportive environment, where effort as well as success is recognised. Pupils participate in at least 2 different PE lessons each week, covering different skills focuses each half term based on our progression map. Children are encouraged to participate in exercise throughout the day, during PE lessons, clubs, outdoor learning, break and lunch provision and special activities.
Our PE curriculum has been developed to provide a range of sports experiences, where every child participates to enhance their skills and learning through competitive, team and individual sports. Children with additional needs are provided with appropriate support to enable them to take part and gain confidence in skills, understanding and motivation.
Our Curriculum supports a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. Our curriculum also lends a particular focus to agility, balance, co-ordination and fitness. Children take part in individual skills, group skills and team games, using PE equipment appropriate for their age and current ability.
Alternative sports are offered through break and lunchtimes, PE lessons and extra-curricular clubs, including street dance, four square and dodgeball. All pupils are encouraged to participate in PE and adjustments are made to suit all learners. Any non-participators (e.g. if injured) are engaged in other ways, to ensure lesson objectives are still understood. Children in KS2 also take part in swimming lessons.
IMPACT
At Cherry Orchard, we encourage children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging, fun and purposeful. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, and many of them also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport, fostering a positive impact on their emotional health and well-being and allowing them to grow up to live happy and healthy lives, utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
