VISION

To develop a greater understanding of the global world and different cultures while building a fascination with exploring and learning new words.

INTENT

At Cherry Orchard Primary School, we aim to deliver a high-quality, engaging languages curriculum, which teaches children to love, learn and live as a global citizen in an ever-changing world.
We aim to inspire our budding linguists to develop the self-confidence to be able to communicate in another language, to respect and understand other cultures and celebrate diversity. We will develop an enjoyment of exploring and learning new words, creating a passion for different cultures and communicating with others.

Our work is linked to the United Nations Development Goals, specifically 10: Overcome barriers to ensure an equal opportunity for all and 11: Protect the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

IMPLEMENTATION

Our core language of French covers the four key areas of language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing, to ensure that all pupils have opportunities to explore and express their ideas and thoughts in another language. We follow the Rivers Languages Framework (written to fulfil the National Curriculum requirements) to ensure that our curriculum is coherent and progression is evident throughout KS2.

In KS2, children learn through lessons that happen each week and through the use of incidental language (when answering the register, counting or classroom commands). Pupils are taught to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. They are encouraged to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt. Through their studies, pupils can also discover and develop an appreciation of the culture in countries where French is the official language.

Although languages are not a compulsory subject in Early Years or KS1, at our school we include French vocabulary, songs, rhymes and simple phrases as part of the children’s learning as we believe it encourages them to be enthusiastic and embed languages from the beginning of their school life.

IMPACT

Throughout our languages curriculum, children will be exposed to new and unfamiliar vocabulary, building on their previous learning, so that they enjoy their learning and become more confident. As a result, they will leave Cherry Orchard thinking like a linguist and prepared for their continuing languages journey into KS3 and the wider world.
